Your first appointment.
Every patient's first appointment will be different from another's - everyone is unique! All first appointments will however follow this basic template:
Consultation
Your practitioner will take a detailed medical history of your condition. They will ask questions around how long it's been there for, whether it's changed over time, what may have caused it, etc. They will also ask for information for other things such as your level of activity and lifestyle. Sometimes the questions may seem unrelated to your condition, but don't worry: if they are asking that question, then it is likely related to what you're experiencing.

Examination
Once your practitioner is happy with the information they have gathered, they will perform a physical exam. This will be a combination of observation, palpation, movement screens, orthopaedic tests and neurological tests, all uniquely tailored to your condition. Some of the tests may cause some discomfort since we are investigating structures that might be sore.

Report of findings
A report of findings is where your practitioner will describe what they've learnt from the consultation and examination and give a diagnosis. Sometimes the diagnosis given can be as simple as a muscle spasm or mechanical low back pain, or can be more complex. Your practitioner will explain the diagnosis and ensure that you understand through education and advice. You will then be able to discuss a potential plan of management which will outline the expected timeframe for improvement, frequency of appointments, what techniques will be used, whether a rehabilitation program will be useful, and lifestyle advice. This will differ greatly from person to person, and can be affected by things such as your job, hobbies, underlying conditions, and others. Your practitioner will include you in all aspects of decision making surrounding your plan of care.

Treatment
If both you and your practitioner are happy to proceed, and if there's still time during your first appointment, then a treatment session can be done. This will involve the techniques that the practitioner has already described during the report of findings.
